(a meditation on discrimination/ “invisibility” in the workplace)

Knock, knock

I know you hear me rapping on the door

outside in the hall, I’m back

I came knocking before.

 .

Knock, knock

I warned you I’d be back for sure

this school is the public’s

and not your mom and pop store.

 .

Knock, knock

I hear you in there trying to explore

every way you can to keep me out

even ignoring the law.

 .

Knock, knock

I said I won’t be ignored,

I’ve paid my dues and the piper,

got my papers, passed my boards.

 .

Knock, knock

this ain’t a joke anymore

I won’t be your punchline

or a blue dress you wore

 .

Knock, knock

ten years that you’ve stolen

 .

Knock, knock

ten years you’ve denied me advancement

 .

knock, knock

ten years you’ve measured me differently

 .

knock, knock

ten years you’ve worked quite against me

 .

knock, knock

knock, knock

knock, knock

 .

I am not going away.
